Swedish Bitters - the secret of a healing mixture

Swedish Bitters - the secret of a healing mixture

Swedish Bitters is a herbal mixture developed in the 17th century by Klaus Samst, a Swedish physician. He believed it had health-promoting properties and attributed his longevity to its use. This mixture gained popularity in the 1970s by herbalist Maria Treben. She wrote a book describing the properties and uses of the herbs used in the mixture. According to the author, it was the distinctive combination of active ingredients that helped alleviate ailments. According to Maria Treben, Swedish Bitters was prepared from 11 herbs:

Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) – Digestive and antimicrobial support

Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) – Antiseptic, anti-inflammatory

Saffron (Crocus sativus) – Mood and circulation support

Senna leaf (Senna alexandrina) – Gentle laxative

Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) – Pain relief and decongestant

Rhubarb root (Rheum palmatum) – Digestive aid
